Immunology is the science of the defensive mechanisms that we use to protect our body from enemies, such as microorganisms and a toxic environment. The first line of defense of our body is the skin. Since the skin is always exposed to the elements, it is endowed with remarkable defensive properties.

The defensive properties of our body reside in a remarkable set of cells that together are called the Immune System. The cells of the Immune System interact in a manner exquisitely coordinated so as not to expend unnecessary energy resources while effectively defending the organism.

To conserve energy the cells of the Immune System are at rest until they are called into action to fight off an invasion. Such a system would be ideal in an environment where attacks would occur occasionally as it may have existed many hundreds of years ago, when there were fewer people, less toxic chemicals in the environment, and fewer opportunities for humans to come in contact with virulent viruses and bacteria and other microorganisms. Today however, the environment is replete with organisms and toxins that continually attempt to invade our bodies and often succeed. Our bodies are continually subjected to a variety of toxic chemicals in the environment, subjected to solar radiation, which has become potent because of the decreasing ozone layer, subject to more and more virulent microorganisms. In addition some bacteria and viruses are able to suppress the Immune System preventing the mounting of an adequate defense.

Following the purchase of the Patent US No. 4,138,479, Process for the preparation of immunopotentiating agents from components of yeast cell wall material from Bayer, Immudyne began to explore the use of yeast cell wall polysaccharides, specifically -glucans, as activators of the immune system and their possible therapeutic uses.

Originally Immudyne prepared a soluble (LPC-100) and a particulate (Nayad)-glucan, however, since the soluble beta glucan was prepared from a phenol extract of yeast cell walls, resulted in low yields and gave results similar to the particulate -glucan, the soluble was not pursued.

During the last 10 years Immudyne has been assigned patents for the isolation, purification and use of yeast-glucan.
